TIde reavers

Background

For too many years the Triangle has cursed ships. Condemned them to this new form of life.

According to legend, countless ships unfortunate enough to enter the Devil’s Triangle vanished without warning or explanation. It was said that the Triangle itself swallowed them whole. Yet within the endless fog and cursed waters, those lost ships found a new form of life, powered by the souls of the sailors who once sailed aboard them.

Weathered timber fused with flesh, rusted iron became bone, and tattered sails intertwined with fur and feathers. The memories, hopes, and regrets of every soul aboard were woven together, creating a single being known as a Tide Reaver. No longer bound to one body or one life, they became the living embodiment of the ship itself.

Each Tide Reaver carries the scars of its final voyage. Broken masts, torn sails, rotting wood, become permanent parts of their bodies. Barnacles, coral, seaweed, and salt forever cling to them, marking the centuries they have spent roaming the cursed waters.

Although many fear them as monsters, Tide Reavers are not driven by mindless violence. They sail the mist-covered waters of the Devil’s Triangle as one fleet, protecting one another and guarding the secrets hidden within the fog.

Few outsiders have ever seen a Tide Reaver and lived to tell the tale. Those who do return speak of silent ships appearing from impossible mists, ships with teeth, and beast-like silhouettes of vessels that should have sunk centuries ago. Some claim the Tide Reavers hunt those who disturb the Triangle, while others believe they are simply protecting their eternal home from those who would plunder its secrets.

No one truly knows what lies at the heart of the Devil’s Triangle. Some believe an ancient sea god sleeps beneath its waters, while others say the Triangle itself is alive, feeding upon lost ships before granting them a second existence. Whatever the truth, one thing remains certain:

Once the sea claims your ship, it never lets it go

Physical Traits

No two Tide Reavers are exactly alike, as each one reflects the ship and crew from which it was born. However, all Tide Reavers share several defining characteristics that set them apart from other species.

General Appearance

  • A body shaped with subtle features resembling a ship, such as a prow-like snout, a broad hull-like torso, or keel-inspired markings.
  • Rotten or weathered driftwood teeth, often splintered and jagged like broken planks.
  • No visible paw pads
  • Paws may develop wooden plating, resembling worn deck boards or driftwood.

Maritime Growths

As they age, Tide Reavers naturally become overgrown with marine life, including:

  • Barnacles
  • Coral
  • Seaweed and kelp
  • Seashells
  • Rope, chains, or fishing nets entwined within their fur

These growths are a natural part of their body and continue to develop throughout their lifetime.

Ship Features

Many Tide Reavers grow structures that resemble parts of their original vessel.
These may include:

  • One or more masts, either intact or broken.
  • Torn sails attached to the body, neck, back, or tail.
  • Rigging and ropes woven through fur or horns.
  • Lanterns, anchors, cannons, or figureheads partially fused into their body (optional traits).

Tail

The tail is one of the most recognizable features of a Tide Reaver.

It is often decorated with:

  • Torn sails from their own vessel.
  • Weathered flags collected throughout their voyages.
  • Battle-worn banners taken as trophies from defeated enemies.
  • Ropes, knots, and strips of faded cloth that trail behind them in the wind.

The older and more experienced a Tide Reaver is, the more decorated their tail often becomes, serving as a visual record of their travels and victories.

Aging

With age, a Tide Reaver gradually becomes more ship than beast. Their wood darkens, coral spreads across their body, sails become more tattered, and marine life flourishes upon them.
